Koh Kood is located close to the islands of Koh Chang and Koh Mak in The Gulf of Thailand. The island is relatively undiscovered and offers travelers a chance to experience a true Robinson Crusoe island atmosphere.
The name Koh Kood stems from the Thai word for Tortoise and while the island does not resemble one, life here certainly moves with the speed of one. Koh Kood is often spelled Koh Kut, Ko Kut or even Koh Kut.

KOH KOOD WATERSPORTS - DIVING, SNORKELING & KAYAKING
Diving Koh Kood
When Diving Koh Kood anything is possible. The underwater world of koh kood has been largely untouched and unexplored. Our team are still discovering new dive sites every day. Our current favorites are Koh Mai Si Lek and Koh Raet.
Koh Mai Si Lek is a small island located roughly a mile off the North West side of Koh Kood. Approaching from and anchoring off the West side of the Island we drop down to a max depth of 13meters, the reef consists mainly of hard corals such as the Acropora and Porites species.
Koh Raet is an even smaller island located a mile off the West coast of Koh Kood and directly opposite one of the local resorts and camping grounds. We approach this smaller island from South and anchor up on the south east point where we have a long strip of reef running parallel to the island. This charming site has a maximum depth of 12 meters, most of the enchanting corals are shallower which makes this a great spot for both divers and snorkelers. This site is made up of a good mixture of hard coral and extensive healthy beds of soft coral.
Aow Yai is the location of a quaint fisherman's village where the fisherman dock and assess their haul. This site has much the same as the Islands but with the added bonus of large underwater fish storage units which contain all the live fish that the fishermen have caught. In order to keep the fish fresh they are kept alive in these cordoned off areas.
Remember you could always request a special exploratory dive, not only can you dive somewhere where no one else has ever dived before but you could discover all the treasures of the deep or have a dive site named after you.
Koh Chang and its surrounding archipelago are all part of the Koh Chang National Marine Park. There are numerous islands here and they all have their individual underwater charm, our favorite by far is Koh Rang. Koh Rang is located just 45 minutes speed boat ride from our pier. One of the pleasant things about this area that there have been extensive efforts to preserve the marine life in the form of permanent mooring buoy s. Many of the sites around this island are cordoned off with bright yellow buoys and rope which makes the dive and snorkel sites easy to locate and protects the snorkelers and divers in the water from passing boats.
The dive site contains a wealth of coral and shoals of fish can often be seen swimming of the reef.
Where to kayaking
At the activities center we run guided kayaking tours up to our local water fall. Along the way you will get to see huge mangrove trees that have their roots lodged deep in the river bed, Also when kayaking up the river you get a little insight into how the local Thais live in their wooden houses perched on stilts over the river. About 30 minutes up the river is a little wooden jetty that we tie the kayaks to, when everything is secure we head off along a jungle path to visit Klong Chao water fall.

The weather is fine all year round, with the exception of some rain showers during summer months (March – April). Koh Kood is influenced by the northeastern and southwestern monsoons.
The island is rather flat compared to Koh Chang. The highest mountain on the island is “Khao Phaenth”, measuring 315 metres. Koh Kood has a good number of wonderful beaches with crystal clear water (Ta Pho Beach, Khlong Chao Beach, Thakian Beach, Phrao Beach etc.). Inland, the island is very “wild” with virgin jungle and a lot of coconut and rubber plantations.

KOH KOOD LOCATION
While the global climate has experienced periods of both cooling and warming over millions of years, the climate of Southeast Asia has remained more or less the same as it is today. His is due to its location around the equator and, being surrounded by ocean providing plenty of moisture in the form or rain, the region was able to sustain consistent rainforests over a very long period of time. The rain is more evenly distributed throughout the year along the tropical zone, nurturing equatorial rainforests across South and Central America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australia, which were all parts of the same landmass during the last ice age. Then, as the glaciers melted and the sea level rose, many of these rainforests became cut off from ech ther and various species established themselves, developing along distinctive evolutionary paths in response to local ecosystems and creating a great diversity of forest eco-systems and unique flora and fauna.
Situated in Trat, the easternmost province of Thailand, very close to the Cambodian border and about 315 km. from Bangkok. Koh Kood's size ranks it as the fourth largest island in Thailand or the second largest island next to Koh Chang in Trat Province. The Island is 25 kilometers long and 12 kilometers wide covers an area of approximately 105 square kilometers or 65,625 Rai. Its natural features mountains and plains where many streams originate and become waterfalls.
One famous waterfall is Nam Tok Khlong Chao, which flows throughout the year and is an ideal place for swimming. You can contact "The Hub" Activity Center at the Away Resort for interestin tours.
In 1911, King Rama VI paid a royal visit to this waterfall and named it 'Nam Tok Anam Kok' to commemorate Ong Chiang Su. In addition; there are beaches with crystal-clear seas. Very popular among visitors are areas such as Taphao Beach, Khlong Chao Beach, Khlong Hin Beach, and Phrao Beach. Accommodations with a private atmosphere is available for visitors at the inner sea of Koh Kood, and the other two islands, Koh Rat and Koh Mai Si, opposite to Koh Kood.
Koh Kood has no road that entirely circles the island and there are only two main roads, ne from the northeast port at Ao Salad Bay to Laem Hin Dum Cape, and one on the western coast, which is about 14 km. long. The only partially-paved road runs from Baan Ao Salad in the northeast to the southwest of the island and is approximately 14 km. in length, however, the road is only 2 meters wide. A very important bridge, Klong Chao Bridge, crosses to Lam Hin Dum Port in the western part of the island.

KOH KOOD HISTORY
The original inhabitants of Koh Kood were Thais and Cambodians who fled to the Thai territory when the French took over the city of Padjantakiri in 1904. The oldest community is Klong Mad Village whose residents still make a living out of planting rubber trees, cultivation of coconuts and basic fisheries. But the biggest community on Koh Kood is Ao Yai Village, a harbor where many fishing boats seek refuge during rough weather. Koh Kood (Koh Kud) has an essential infrastructure which includes a hospital, couple of schools, a police station, electricity (mainly for state-run facilities), water and telephone system. Fuel and solar energy are the main source of power on the island.
Ridged plains have given rise to many inland brooks, streams and waterfalls. The Klong Chao Waterfall is probably the most impressive with it’s height and spread. With three tiers it allows visitors to swim and bathe in the waters all year around. It was visited by King Rama VI in 1911 and was given the royal name ‘Anamkok Waterfall’ in commemoration to Ong Chiang Lue, a Vietnamese king taking refuge in the Kingdom of Thailand during the reign of King Rama I in the late 18th century.
